fr tho one criticism of Cats that always tickles me is the specific brand of 'its so weird/horny/unsettling/goofy' that implies the critic in question thinks Cats is like that on accident. like i hate to break it to you but the song where they all speak in sync while creepy carnival-esque music plays is intended to unsettle. the abrupt transition from depressing bittersweet songs to high-energy bops is intended to give you whiplash. the rapidfire slinging of random terms that dont make sense is intended to throw you off. the unusually horny undertones are supposed to be, well, unusually horny. why? because
they are cats bro
if the tone/presentation/events seem strange and inhuman its because the cast of characters are, in fact, not human. like,,, Cats presents to its audience a fantastical snapshot of a kind of life that belongs to an animal on the outskirts of human society: a life of violence and community and sex and ritual and utter senselessness, and then people who see it will unironically go 'wow wtf why does this piece of media lie so far outside of my scope of normality. lol 🤣'
#cats fan on main#cats the musical#im just saying theres a reason we're trapped in the hellscape of remake/rerun/remaster/sequel/prequel/etc#and thats bc waaay too many ppl love to point their fingers and laugh at anything even remotely 'weird'#which just leads to studios deciding to never present anything original or interesting for fear of sales declining .0000001% or whatever

Had a good chat with my partner about it today that maybe let me put a finger on what's always bugged me about "we're here to fix canon" attitudes being so prevalent in fandom (especially in the past 10ish years) throughout my life. This is not to say there's never a time or place for that (I've written fix its myself, or the occasional meta on how something could be fixed/improved) or that people are wrong to (we're anti fandom policing). It's also not an issue to me on the basis of "I love my blorbo in canon and fandom mischaracterizes them in the name of 'fixing' them" etc as it is just... coming from a fundamentally different perspective for story analysis / interaction than most (not all) people in fandom, I think.
One of the reasons I enjoyed getting my English degree was because I was finally being encouraged to and taught in alignment with what my brain had always be inclined to do: you always assume that there's a reason, and a good reason, for the story to do whatever it's doing. It assumes that the story is already exactly what it is supposed to be as it is supposed to be, and it's up to you to find the reasons Why.
The story was boring, or made you feel uncomfortable/bad, or you couldn't root for a character or relationship? All of that, at least at the beginning, doesn't really Matter. You assume that the story is paced fine, you assume the discomfort was intentional or part of something broader (historical shit that hasn't aged well) or that the dichotomy of "I feel invested or not invested" isn't useful. And in doing so, you replace all that with asking why.
An example I'll use is 1984 by George Orwell. I read that book in high school and I fucking hated it. Normally, I like the protagonist the most in anything I watch/read, but in that book, I loathed both the two leads and were actively rooting for them to be captured and tortured so the book could end faster; it was an actively miserable affair. I don't think that was necessarily the author's intention (certain amount of death of the author is baked in, but for a lot of the texts I was reading, we didn't even know the author or anything substantial about them, i.e. Beowulf) but, more importantly, I don't think any of those things are Flaws or downsides in the text.
Part of this is because 1984 is a dystopian novel (if a romcom book breaks genre convention that badly where you're miserable reading it, yeah, maybe something went wrong, but more on that in a minute) but even then it doesn't really matter on the basis of genre; I'm sure some people read 1984 and felt fascinated/excited while reading.
Rather, the focus becomes: what do I find so unlikeable about the protagonists? Why would they be written that way (on purpose)? What does it say about the society they live in? What does it say about their characterization, social stratification, etc etc? If a character does something that I think is non-sensical, why? Have I missed something? Should I watch retrospectively for clues? Is there another way to engage and to understand? Is what I label as confusion potentially a, or the, Point?
It is only after finding the reasons, and/or finding them unsuitable, that I let my subjective feelings into play. While a story can have great merit on the basis of relatability, relatability or "this aligns with my worldview / expectations / desires / etc." is not the be-all end-all of discerning quality
For example, I'm never going to be a fan of Jane and Rochester (she's 18, he's her 40 year old employer who routinely lies to her) but there are reasons, Good reasons, they get together in Jane Eyre (a book so subjectively boring I struggled through it twice) in response to both when the book was written and with the book's themes / symbols / their characterization. If they didn't end up together, it would be a fundamentally different story; it would not be Jane Eyre. So objectively, it's fine and an understandably massive influence on the western literary canon; subjectively, it's so fucking bad and I'm so glad I never have to read it again. But if I stopped there with my lack of interest or dislike of the main romance, I'd be missing out on what the text has to offer as well, the text.
This applies to more modern day stuff as well. I don't like Double Trouble from SheRa as nonbinary representation, and I'm nonbinary myself; however, I can acknowledge that the things I don't like about them were probably simultaneously empowering and exactly what the author (who is also nonbinary) wanted to be per his own experience of gender. Having a "I assume the text is right" mindset means that I can hold space for my own feelings/analysis (i.e. I also did not like Catra's arc, as I think she needed to learn other things / be written under a different lens) while holding space for the text as is (under the canonical lens of Catra learning it's never too late to be saved, I think her arc is conclusive and well done). And these two viewpoints aren't fundamentally opposed, but can coexist as analytical soup, being equally true / having equal value under the subjective (my view) and more 'objective' (the canon text's construction, or what I / the scholarly consensus, if it exists, believes it to be, anyway) at the same time.
Again, none of this is to say that you can't take issue with a canon text, or want to change something. I remember one time I was watching a show where their refusal to explore a romantic relationship between the female lead and her guy best friend was actively making the show worse; I understood their reasonings of wanting to put them with other people to explore their relationships, and wanting to emphasize a male-female friendship at the core of the story, and I still wanted them to put the two together as a Ship instead for various reasons. But that doesn't mean my line of thinking would've been Objectively Better—assuming if they had been paired together would've been executed in the manner I'd enjoy, or that them being paired with other people couldn't have been executed in ways I would've enjoyed more—merely that I likely would've enjoyed the series more per my own subjective preferences.
What I see in fandom sometimes is that people, understandably, aren't approaching at the start from a "the story always has a good reason" as much as they are speed-running from a "this didn't make sense to me or felt bad/off" and maybe examining why (which is supremely useful!) but not going back to examine the other side of the coin as to why the story would do it anyway.
Because sometimes the story—or a part of a story—is still 'bad' to us. It's just worthwhile to look at why it's 'good,' too.
#dragons rambles#mine#writing#literature#analysis series#analysis#this is also the singular reason (beyond being able to explain thoughts) why i'm 'good' at analysis tbh#you just ask why. you assume there's a why. you assume there's a good why#only when the story stops giving compelling whys that don't fit into anything else going on does it start Declining tbh#atla fandom im looking at u#'i don't understand why kataang ended up together / the lion turtle energy bending' have u honest to god tried to#this is also reflected in how i write bc whenever my story changes it's underpinned with a feeling of#'this is always the way the story was i just didn't know it till now'#also contributes to taking 90% of things ppl say in good faith tbh

i dont understand how people call you "basically a cop" when the most power you have is to tell someone to leave.... like?? you cant arrest people you cant detain them the most you can do is call the actual cops which...... literally ANYONE can do that like????
p much. Usually don't have to tho, people usually listen when you're calm and respectful- more than half the time I'm on the phone it's for an ambulance
People aren't kidding when they say it's basically babysitting

I'm just thinking-What if it's a good review? What would come out of it? Would Carmy still have enough drive in him to change? What if this makes it harder for Carmy to change because it proves Chef David's point that his methods produce excellence?
Everyone is telling Richie, Carmy, and Natalie that the bear is amazing and packed, but their own inner fears and anxieties are stronger than the good in front of them. But let's just say, now that it is perfect, how are they going to enjoy the fruits of their labor?
#If Carmy does not change#then Sydney will leave and go to work for Chef Shapiro.#If the reviews are great then technically the bear is perfect like Richie and Carmy want for the bear.#So if it's perfect he no longer has reason to keep declining to invite frank and Tiffany.#diff scenarios#sydcarmy#the bear fx#the bear season 3

Two Different Worlds
CW: slightly depressing/unequal world? (I'll add more if asked)
Any giant, for whatever reason, can enter human cities. Be it a business negotiation or visiting family and friends, the city will welcome them all, for a price. With giant societies being the proprietors of nearly all the wealth in the frontier, humans are treated as faux second-class citizens. Not generating enough influence to really matter when a problem is presented, especially one where the sole cause is the giants themselves. For but a small cost, any of them can enter a human city, with free reign over everything we've built. Stomping their way through with little regard for the 'equal' citizens below, humans are forced to make way for them as the giant ooh's and aah's degradingly at the city miniaturized for their liking.
Every Human grows up with the constant, oppressive weight of being considered lesser, No, physically BEING lesser. Smaller, tiny, insignificant, a pest, a human. But to be presented with a person so fabulously wealthy, so physically above you and your peers, and all they do when they see your city is laugh...
It's like living in a separate world.
#sorry for the slight depressing vibe this gives off#i wanted to give a 'real' vibe to it#not quite full dystopian#but it definitely isnt pleasant to live in as a human#ALSO the tiny riding on the giants shoulder has a sad expression for a reason#while humans technically arent allowed to be picked up without permission... if a skyscraper sized person went up to YOU#in this society and laid out their hand... would you really decline?#giant/tiny#g/t#gt community#g/t writing#gt art#giant tiny#size difference#gt#sfw gt#gentle giant#gentle giantess#giantess#my art

I've been dreaming of making a webcomic for nearly half of my life, and I've just started actually working on that, but... do you think it's worth it for me to start even with the decline of the scene? White noise is quite possibly my favorite piece of media, period, and it's in a format I love, so I figure you're a good person to ask the thoughts of.
(In reference to this post, I am guessing.)
ABSOLUTELY! 100%! MAKE YOUR WEBCOMIC!! Please don't let the whinging of us old heads deter you from making a project that you're passionate about.
I think it's important to ask yourself what would make it 'worth it' in your mind. What do you want out of making a webcomic? Is it that you want to experience the act of creation? Do you have a story you need to get out? Is your goal to get a book printed? To have a large audience? To improve your artistic and storytelling skills? To make a living on your artwork? To make merch? Some of these are way harder to do today, but some of these are goals that you will reach simply by making your webcomic.
If it helps at all, I had to do a lot of this kind of talk to myself when I was starting in 2011 (less because of the scene and more because I was low in self-confidence.) The only way I could get myself to start posting WN on Smackjeeves was to remind myself that I was doing this for myself only, and maybe no one would read it, and that would be ok, because if nothing else I would be making something I love and I would learn a lot doing it. 13 years later and I'd consider my goals met, even if I stopped WN before I'm truly done with it.
(Which speaking of, I feel very strongly that unfinished or abandoned webcomics are not a waste of time for either the reader OR the creator. Just because a story doesn't get an ending--or gets an ending you don't like--doesn't mean it's without worth!!)
The webcomic scene is not going to fully disappear anytime soon--it's just suffering the same corporatization that has gripped almost every art scene at some point in some way, and I think that problem has been compounded by the consolidation of the internet into a few social media platforms. But those platforms will crumble, and the corporations will bail once they can't squeeze any more money out of webcomics. The scene won't ever been the same as it was in the 2010s, but that's how time works, and that doesn't mean it won't ever get better than it is or that there's not gems to be found now. The only way it gets better is if more people make and read webcomics!
#webcomics#some of this convo reminds me of when I moved to Portland in 2014#I got here just as the local comic scene was starting to decline due to cost of living increases#and the scene was one reason I moved here!#so I get that it's depressing to hear people complain that the Good Old Days are All Gone just as you show up#and the thing is like yeah Portland's different now#some of the different is bad n some of it is just different#a lot of it is symptomatic of larger problems n not unique to Portland#but it's still a beautiful city and I'm glad to be here and anyone who says Portland just sucks now is a liar and a fool#you know how much cool shit I find in this city just by walking around on the reg? 10 yrs and I'm still finding new things to love!#last weekend I found a combo comic and riso print shop I didn't know existed!#and I found out a new riso supply place is opening up near it! that's fuckin cool!#anyway: please make your webcomic! do not let the grip of corporations squeeze the love of making things out of you!#yo + una conversación casual = EL PROBLEMA ES EL CAPITALISMO#also thank you for the nice words about WN <3

Anyway they won’t allow comments OR reblogs (my guess is so they can stay in their echo chamber and so they don’t have to own up to spreading misinformation) so I’m going to debunk this misinformation here on my own post.
Sharks are, in fact, NOT on the verge of extinction, that is clear by a simple Google search. Certain sharks species are ENDANGERED or VULNERABLE which has nothing to do with JAWS and everything to do with the fishing industry. Of course because they are endangered and vulnerable they RISK extinction in the future but they are not 'on the verge' of it.
List of endangered and vulnerable shark species
Sharks, rays, and similar species are killed NOT because of an American movie but because of overfishing of sharks. In certain cultures, shark fin soup is said to be medicinal and provide a wide range of health benefits. Despite no evidence of such being true, certain cultures still fish for sharks for their fins alone. This is deadly because of the way sharks breathe. They need to be in motion in order to breathe and without their fins they slowly suffocate to death.
Source of why sharks are currently endangered
Last, lets finally bring up JAWS and why this argument doesn't prove the point of "fiction can affect reality" in the way they think it does. JAWS causing people to be more afraid of sharks did NOT cause shark-finners and shark overfishing to occur or get worse. The "JAWS effect" doesn't actually exist in any meaningful way beyond people from the USA being more afraid of sharks. JAWS did not have that much of an impact in other parts of the world where shark fishing is common. Of course the movie JAWS DID inevitably lead to people killing sharks, but not nearly to the scale most assume. Shark-fishing tournaments were set up and fishermen at the time would catch as many sharks as they could. This did lead to a big decline of sharks in the US east coast due to the overfishing. Keep in mind that this, however, does not account for the millions of sharks killed for their fins every year.
Did JAWS have an impact on the way people (especially in English-speaking countries) saw sharks? Yes it did, the uneducated masses at the time had no idea how sharks actually functioned. Did JAWS cause a decline in shark populations in the US? Yes it did, fishing contests put in place greatly affected the sharks in the East coast of the US. Did this have a greater impact on shark populations as a whole and their decline? Nope! The biggest reasons sharks are endangered as they are now is because of overfishing, shark finning, and bycatch (catching a fish and then discarding it because it isn't the fish you desired/can sell).

Sooooo tired of the idea that a character "following their heart for once 🥺" makes them a good person.
Anakin Skywalker's whole story is literally about that.
He chose love over his responsibility to the Jedi and the people in the universe and ended up killing the very woman he chose over everything and everyone else.
Rose Quartz's story is exactly the same. She followed her heart and escaped her abusive family but was too naïve to deal with and truly understand the consequences of her actions and it led to centuries of war, thousands of deaths, and her son blaming himself for things he wasn't even alive for.
Sometimes responsibility and duty DO come before love. Sometimes you DO have to make sacrifices for the greater good even if it destroys you. Because that is what a good person actually does. A good person puts others their own fucking daughter over themselves and wants to do right by them.
Yes, and at the very least the creators for both of those characters understood that the “following your heart” route for their respective characters would lead to tragedy. That was actually the whole point for Anakin and Rose.
Vivziepop appears to really believe Stolas is in the right for doing terrible things for the sake of his own selfish desires, and yet to make it justifiable to her audience she’s destroyed the story, the characters, and completely abandoned the worldbuilding in Helluva Boss, specifically the class system and commentary, so that Stolas comes out looking sympathetic. I can’t stand it and I can’t stand the thousands of misguided yet hostile fans that accept that BS.
#helluva boss critical#ppl seem to forget that she even destroyed Stolas to achieve this weird new territory we’re in#he was extremely powerful at first and able to turn ppl to stone#could heavily influence the human world#and was able to locate IMP when they were in trouble#now suddenly he needs saving and can’t hurt a fly#he’s incapable of accepting his role as a Prince of Hell despite him not being the only one stuck w it#he’s so pathetic now#and fans are totally fine w his decline as long as they can baby him and ship him with Blitzø#for no reason bc they have nothing in common!!!#what do they like about each other aside from sex?????? Can anyone answer me that?#when they’re together it’s just awkward bc there’s no chemistry#and no I can’t forget that Stolas forces Blitzø into sex in exchange for the grimoire#“Oh ur daddy sucked? Ur wife was a bitch? Oh no! Everyone in Hell has the same or similar so fucking suck it up u rapist!”
